Space mites consume major particles of organic matter. Like all acari, space mites have a simple gut; they have no stomach but rather diverticulae, which are sacs or pouches that divert out of hollow organs. Like many decomposer animals, they select food that has been pre-decomposed by fungi which is often seeded by mankind within space colonies. These creatures have been genetically engineered to eat anything from metal to corpses. The space mite survives in all climates, even at high altitude. They are loyal & make excellent companions & pets. Space mites bear sexually mature young & have life cycles of 20 years or more.
They are often used to herd space cows & have a telepathic bond with their owners & masters. They have been known to seek revenge for more then half a life time if their owners have been killed.
The mite's gut contains potent digestive enzymes (notablyproteases) that persists in their feces. These enzymes enable the space mite to break down most organic & inorganic materials making feeding a non issue.Space mites survive and reproduce easily in space ships (especially in space stations), deriving moisture from the humidity generated by human breathing, perspiration and saliva.
The space might is named mostly because of its immunity to vacuum & hard space. They make excellent guard animals as well. Often found on many off world colonies.
