Notes For Adapting The Free OSR - "The Village With No Name" Adventure For Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Or Your Old School Campaigns

So I've been looking for a follow up adventure for the Night's Dark Terror but came across my notes for the free adventure The Village With No Name from Dragon's foot.org. This adventure can easily be ported over to any old school campaign as both a single adventure encounter or as a part of an on going campaign.

Along the road in a distant location is a village with no name but with citizens under siege by a gang of evil rogues, adventurers and rubes. Who will confront these men and their leaders? And what twist of fate awaits the PCs?

AD&D

Levels 1-3
This adventure has all of the hallmarks of a first level set up and follow up for Night's Dark Terror, this adventure is one that I've run as one of the locations of abandoned village cleared out during the Green Death Plague. The adventure has a decidedly small scale affair adventure flavor and there's really no hook into it. But that's part of the reason why its so easily customizable  for DYI sword and sorcery action. With a bit of work the Village With No Name could be dropped into the back end of a campaign without anyone knowing it. The elements for a sword and sorcery adventure right in the back end of it and the NPC's run the gamut from helpful to complete scum waiting to slit the PC's throats at the first opportunity. All of this happens within eighteen pages. There's something of an English village feel to this adventure but with a little effort on the dungeon master's part it could be adapted to the Slavic/Russian frontier style of play that Night's Dark Terror inspires otherwise this adventure could inspire a Robert Howard Solomon Kane vibe to it. This village can easily be ported into a Lamentations of the Flame Princess campaign or a Dark Albion setting.

There is a decent range of personalities in the NPC's in this village, opportunities for both combat role playing abound here. The mix of peoples, motives, and strangeness makes this adventure a nice addition for a sword and sorcery campaign. Something about this adventure has always struck me as a mix between a sword & sorcery film done by David Lynch with a dark underbelly waiting for PC's to blunder into the violence of the place. For my part running The Village With No Name' with Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Hyperborea I've used the adventure as a place that the party passes through on their way to other adventures surrounded by nameless ruins from ages past. The party of adventurers stops here for supplies and get's hints that all is not right here. AS&SH has always had hints of the classic pulpy bits of Greek mythology scattered throughout it more inspired by Ray Harryhausen movies and pulp literature then anything else. So what I've done over the years of running this adventure is to put a spin of the Slavic & Russian myths mixed into this adventure to give a sense of the otherworldly and the dark fantasy aspects of it. I've used the Village With No Name deep in the interior parts of Hyperborea for AS&SH several times. Given the dark nature of the place and the overall feel of the adventure I think it works quite well for either Astonishing Swordsmen and Sorcerers of Hyperborea or Lamentations of the Flame Princess with a bit of work.

One or two of the bandits, rogues, and NPC's have had elements of the undead about them and tie ins with the goblins from Night's Dark Terror to give lead ins with a Red and Pleasant Land. This has led to the PC's not feeling easy at all about this location, this includes making on of the prostitutes a minor vampire and having one or two of the bandits having loot from 'elsewhere'. On its own The Village With No Name can easily be used as an adventure location with lots of potential. Given that its free and easily adaptable to any number of  old school campaigns The Village With No Name is a pretty exceptional adventure to throw into your gaming world. The Village With No Name is a damn nice little piece of free down load material to add to your OSR tool box.
